This staircase ascended from the Santa Justa lift and cost me €1.50 to go up it. From the top I had a viewing platform with an average view, and another set of similar stairs leading back down.
The lift itself was steeper than these stairs, and cost €5 for the 30 second journey. It does, however, seem to be the only lift left in Lisbon which is vertical; the rest of them simply appear to be funiculars which travel up the incline of a hill.
Either way, modelled on the Eiffel Tower, built by one of Eiffel’s student’s, whatever-possible-fact-may-come-next, it really wasn’t worth the cost.
Saying that, after a long day of walking around Lisbon with a heavy bag full of camera gear, handing over the €5 did fill me with some delight as I knew at the bottom of this elevator was my hotel where I could relax, and finish off my bottle of port with my feet up.
