This is the inside of the Church of Sta. Maria in Lisbon, Portugal.
I’m not a religious person, but I do enjoy going into churches in the cities that I visit. They are a nice break from the city outside, offering a quiet, dry place to sit and relax for 5 minutes, and which are generally nice and warm, if it’s cold outside, or cool, if it’s hot outside.
An added bonus to this is that many churches are of course beautifully built and decorated, with ornate statues and windows and impressive architecture.
Finally…I’m a people watcher. I enjoy sitting at the back of a church and watching what people do. Some pray, some do not. Some stay for 2 minutes, others for 20. Some make a cross over their body when they enter, others when they leave, others not at all. Some light candles. It’s fascinating to me to see different people from different walks of life coming together in this one place for whatever reason that it means to them and doing whatever they feel is an appropriate thing to do.
