It may be milk, it may be yoghurt in liquid form. I’m not too sure, to be honest, but there were a lot of them in Beijing – piled crate upon crate high, especially around the food markets.
In one of the hutongs I found a pile of crates that were all empty, so I took the top one off and laid it on the floor to take a few shots of it from above. Of course it was while I was poised over this crate that one of the residents decided to come home. She stood in the entrance to the hutong looking at the scene in puzzlement, before shaking her head and moving on by.
It’s not the first time someone wondered what I was doing while setting up a shot, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
