While walking around Nara on a Wednesday afternoon I saw several groups of school girls like the one in this image. Some were sat in groups, others were sat along – all of them were in uniform, and were seemingly excellent at painting. or drawing, or similar.
I say ‘excellent’; my scale is pretty much based upon the question ‘can I tell what it is?’ – if the answer is ‘yes’ then that person is excellent, if the answer is ‘no’ then they are rubbish.
There were no boys in the groups I saw, so in hindsight it makes me think of questions that did not originally come to mind, such as – ‘Are these girls from a same sex school?’ and ‘Do schoolgirls in Japan take art, while schoolboys take woodwork?’.
I often visit a country and assume that culture is the same as my own and so don’t think of such things until later.
